A New Chapter in Patient-Centered Care for Central Alabama
The new UAB Medical West Hospital in Bessemer, Alabama, represents a major investment in health equity and community well-being. Serving a historically underserved region of central Alabama, the facility expands access to quality care for patients in western Jefferson County and beyond.
Designed by HKS Architects in collaboration with KPS Group, the 412,000-square-foot hospital reflects a forward-thinking approach to healthcare—combining advanced clinical capabilities with an environment designed to promote healing, dignity, and ease of access for all.
Every element of the facility reinforces its patient-first mission—from the intuitive floor plan and natural lighting to the serene, hospitality-forward interiors. The campus includes 200 private patient rooms, advanced surgical suites, and a dedicated women’s center—all designed to support wellness and operational efficiency.
Rooted in Nature: A Biophilic Approach
Biophilic design plays a central role in shaping the patient experience. Drawing inspiration from Alabama’s native landscape, the design incorporates organic textures, natural materials, and soft daylighting throughout. Each floor features a unique botanical theme, with the Cahaba Lily—a rare native wildflower—serving as a recurring motif that symbolizes resilience and connection to place.
South Cypress' Role
South Cypress was proud to support the project team by supplying porcelain tile for high-traffic areas including elevator lobbies, patient rooms, and common areas, as well as Ledgestone mosaic tile for the main lobby feature wall. Our materials were selected to complement the design vision while meeting the hospital’s performance standards.
